Eastside Gallery, Berlin

On 12 August 1961, the Soviets began building a wall around West Berlin to separate it from East Berlin and East Germany.  By the next morning, the wall was complete.  More than 90 miles of wall made an island out of West Germany.

Eastside Gallery – This outdoor “gallery” is a section of the Berlin Wall that has been left standing along Muhlenstrasse.   It is just over 1300 metres long and has been covered with 105 paintings and murals on the side that faced East Berlin.  It was first painted in 1990 just after the wall fell.  Some sections were repainted in 2009.

below: A Trabant (the only East German make of car) comes through the wall, painted by Birgit Kinder, 2009. The date on the licence plate, 9 November 1989, is when the wall was opened and East and West Germans were allowed to cross freely.  Demolition of the wall began in June of 1990.

below: The orange bridge in the picture is Oberbaumbrucke (Oberbaum Bridge) that crosses the River Spree near this wall section. This wall runs parallel to the River Spree as the river was part of the ‘border’ here.

below:  A comment on censorship in art by Willi Berger –  “Der Maler Hans Meissel (1888-1969) sowohl im Dritten Reich als auch in der DDR mit Ausstellungsverbot belegt wegen seiner expressiven Malweise setzte mit ‘GOTT ALLEIN DIE EHRE’, J.S. Bachs letzter Komposition der Kunst der Fuge ein Denkmal. [blue] Mit der Kopie des nun erstverottenthaten Bildes mochte ich meinem Lehrer Donk abstatten.”   It’s a copy of a painting by (and tribute to) Hans Meissel whose artwork was banned by the Third Reich.  The title of the painting is “Soli Deo Gloria” and was a tribute to the last composition by J.S. Bach, ‘The Art of the Fugue’.

below: A painting of Leonid Brezhnev and Erich Honecker kissing as painted by Dmitri Vrubel.  It was first painted in 1990 and re painted in 2009.  Honecker was the East German leader in 1989 whose rise to power was aided by Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev.  By 1989, Brezhnev was dead and the more liberal Mikhail Gorbachev was the Soviet leader.

below:  The green creature (with Ore on its tail) seems to want to eat the heart.  The tiger appears on walls in many Spanish cities although sometimes he’s just a black and white head.  He’s the creation of Bloo.  Last, an orange crab with eye lashes on one eye.

Jamaica at Hillgrove, Bristol

Hillgrove is a short street, two blocks long.  It is dissected by Jamaica Street.   On one corner is a large mural by Phlegm.  A man looks through a telescope while sitting on the shoulders of a man who in turn is standing on stilts.  One hand is holding the telescope while a bird on a rope is held by the other.   A large red and white wave reminiscent of ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ by Katsushika Hokusai is the eye catching focus of the painting.  It’s as if he’s looking to the future while standing on the shoulders of giants (masters).

two faces, reefa and leticia

There are many murals that feature images of faces, both male and female, in Wynwood (Miami).  Two of them are featured here.

The first is a large blue young woman with flowing grey hair, painted by Leticia Mandragora.   Her eyes contrast sharply with the rest of her face.  Mandragora is an Italian/Spanish street artist and tattooist.   Her blue faced woman have been painted in a number of places in the USA.  They all seem to have grey hair too.

The second mural is a memorial to street artist Israel Hernandez (aka Reefa) who died after being tasered by police in August 2013.   The portrait in the center portion was painted by Axel Void while a number of other artists contributed to the edges.

Massimo’s woman in Sofia

A large mural of a young woman wearing traditional Bulgarian clothes has been painted by street artist massimo on the side of a building in Sofia.  She is holding a loaf of bread – bread plays an important role in Bulgarian traditions, customs and holidays.

She has a flower in her hair, a rose, which is the national flower of Bulgaria.   But not all of the symbols that she is adorned with are Bulgarian.  On her forehead and around her neck are “third eye” symbols, or chakras.

Allentown (Buffalo) street art

The Allentown area of Buffalo is now home to some interesting murals.   If you walk around the neighbourhood of Allen Street and College Street, this is what you might see:

below: ‘Voyage’ by Chuck Tingley, 2014.  Commissioned by MyBuffaloPride and Loop Magazine and dedicated to Buffalo’s LGBT community and its allies.  “In a world of scrutiny, we have the power to embrace our differences and use our inner light to guide us through the darkest of times.”

below: When this mural was first completed, the grey parts were black.  The large picture of the man that stands between the windows on the left and those in the middle, was quite distinct.  Now, you might have missed him when you first looked at the picture.

below: Between the two words is a painting of a black ‘iron fireman’, a robot-like creature shovelling coal to feed the fire.   This was the logo for the Iron Fireman, a coal stoker first developed in the 1920’s by Thomas Harry Banfield and Cyrus Jury Parker.  A coal stoker mechanically feeds coal into a furnace or boiler – the Iron Fireman was a commercial success in the days when coal was a commonly used fuel.

below: One of the other interesting things about Buffalo is how the architecture is different here, or at least different from what I am used to in Toronto.  The building with the green details on the front is the Puritan Building, built in 1893.  It has recently been renovated with the Billy Club restaurant on the ground level and three storeys of apartments above.   And yes, that is a purple house on the right.  Many of the houses in the area are painted in bright and cheerful colours.
