Senor Schnu hangs out in Aachen

Meet Senor Schnu – you’ll know him by his black mustache, his brown stick body, and the bite out of his head. This half eaten popsicle is the creation of Philip Wallisfurth. He has his own Instagram page.

words on paper, Dircksenstrasse

below:  An old window on Dircksenstrasse covered with paste ups and other graffiti.   The top left pane has two posters with words.

First: ” Nichts andert sich, ausser ich andere mich. Alles andert sich, sobald ich mich verandere” which translates to “Nothing changes unless I change.Everything changes as soon as I change.”

Second (& longer): “Erwartet nicht, dass die anderen euch das Leben, die Liebe oder die Frohlichkeit bringen. Ihr musst zuerst in euch selbst die QUellen des Lebes, der Lliebe und der Freude offnen. Um zu empfangen, muss man mit Geben beginnen”, or in English: “Do not expect the others to bring you life, love or happiness. You must first open in yourself the sources of life, love, and joy. To receive, one must begin with giving.”

On the left are more words.  This time they say “Helft einander. Liebt einander, jeden, alles, jedes, Blatt jeden Lichtstrahl. Vergebt.” or in other words, “Help each other.Love each other, everyone, everything, every, leaf every ray of light.Forgive.”

below: Nearby is another old window with more graffiti.   The larger yellow poster says: “Das Universum Liebt dich und hil– dir” or in English, “The universe loves you and helps you.”.

On the right: “Dein schones Herz ist voller Gute. Verschenke diese Liebe und Gute uneingeschrankt an die Geschopfe der Welt.” which translates to “Your beautiful heart is full of good. Give away this love and goodness unrestricted to the creatures of the world.”

In both of the above posters the words are credited to #Azmuto.  He is the author of self-help, motivational type books so I suspect that these posters are self-promotion as much as anything else.  I’m not sure how that fits into the “advertising vs street art continuum” but they don’t scream ‘buy me’ so I have included them here.

glitter on Dircksenstrasse, Berlin

The pictures on this page are all of paste-ups from artist SOBR‘s project, “It’s Time to Dance”.  They feature life size images of people dancing, alone, in couples, or in groups along with a lot of glitter.  There pictures were taken in August 2018 at which point the paper had been on the wall for a few months.

below: They share the wall space with a lot of other pasteups such as this chicken – dancing with the chicken?  Or maybe not because this chicken seems to have lost her head.

EvL, Edward von Longus in Wedding, Berlin

While walking in Wedding, a part of Berlin, last summer I came across three tall images by Edward von Longus, an Estonian street artist.  In fact, it’s his little hedgehog on a laptop graffiti that is sometimes at the top of this blog.

These are what I saw:

on a pillar in Wedding Berlin, an almost life sized in shades of grey, street art of a person that looks like Abraham Lincoln in a long robe

below: These figures are part of (R)estart Reality an app that facilitates combining street art and digital technology.  Apparently there were 100 ‘people’ in many European capitals with a story to tell to those who have the app.  The program began in June 2017 and I am not sure if it is still running. in shades of grey, street art of a person - a soldier sitting down, helmet on and gun in lap by Edward von Longus

It was in celebration of Estonia’s 100th birthday.

Tegel Art Park, Berlin

The “One Wall, One Mural” project is led by the non-profit organization Urban Nation.  They have brought well-known street artists to the Reineckendorf district in Berlin to paint large murals on the sides of apartment buildings.  When I was there in August 2018, there were 6 murals.

below: by How and Nosm, Spanish brothers (aka Raoul and Davide Perre) .  From watermelon dripping at the top to puzzle pieces on the bottom, with a lot of detail between.

These pictures were taken in August 2018.  Since then, another large mural has been painted on one of the remaining buildings.  It was a collaboration between Nuno Viegas, and the German pair, Hera and Akut.  I don’t have a picture of it but this link will take you to Urban Nation’s description of the mural.

The Cafe Cinema Courtyard starts as a small alley beside the Cafe Cinema off Rosenthaler Strasse close to the Hackescher Market. It is almost completely covered with street art of all kinds – painted murals, stickers, paste ups and more.

Eastside Gallery, Berlin

On 12 August 1961, the Soviets began building a wall around West Berlin to separate it from East Berlin and East Germany.  By the next morning, the wall was complete.  More than 90 miles of wall made an island out of West Germany.

Eastside Gallery – This outdoor “gallery” is a section of the Berlin Wall that has been left standing along Muhlenstrasse.   It is just over 1300 metres long and has been covered with 105 paintings and murals on the side that faced East Berlin.  It was first painted in 1990 just after the wall fell.  Some sections were repainted in 2009.
