ROA Horned Toad

This downtown Vegas mural was painted by Belgian artist known as ROA in 2014.

It is a type of lizard known as a Horned Toad (or Horntoad, Horn Lizard). If you want to get scientific, they are of the genus Phrynosoma. These reptiles are native to western North America where they prefer desert or sandy semi-desert areas.  The mural is painted in bluish grey tones but these lizards are actually brown so they are well camouflaged in sand and dirt.

If there is a predator nearby, the lizard puffs itself up to look bigger and harder to swallow. At least five species of horned toads can also squirt a stream of blood at the predator. The blood comes from tiny blood vessels near their eyes. Apparently it doesn’t taste very good and some predators have second thoughts about eating the lizard.

Wynwood – at NW21st Ave and NW1st Pl

The street names in Miami are confusing!  As I typed the title I felt like I was typing some sort of code.    As I stood at the intersection of NW 21st Avenue and NW 1st Place, this is the street art and murals that I saw:

below:  On one corner, lines cover a couple of walls and a mural by ROA covers another.  On the white wall there are words that say, “Made in the Shade”

Wall/Therapy

Wall Therapy is now an annual event in Rochester New York. It started in 2012 with 11 street artists painting 16 different walls in the city. From their website, Wall Therapy is “a public community-level intervention using mural art as a vehicle to address our collective need for inspiration.” The Wall Therapy website also has a map of the locations of the murals. They are spread around the city. It is possible that some of these murals are not actually a part of the Wall Therapy project.

below: The next four murals were on the side of the same building. I am fairly sure that it was at the end of Flint Street. It is definitely on the west side of the Genessee River by a street that dead ends at the Genessee Riverway Trail.

below: I haven’t been able to find any information yet about the next two murals either. They were both on South Ave. Liquor Store, to the south of most of the other murals that I saw. By the way, it was a nice little store with an interesting selection of wine.
