Starchild Stela

As seen around Montreal on the weekend of 14-16 June 2015

below: first, an oldie on a page from a French book.  I’m not sure what book it is, but it includes the words “protège la virilité de l’époux” which translate to “protects the virility of husband

Starchild Stela character, a girl with shoulder length and slightly curly hair, drawn on a page of an old book whose words are in french.

Using stickers, paste ups, and spraypaint, Starchild Stela is a graffiti artist who combines cute feminine characters with slogans.  I’d like to say that they are ‘common sense’ slogans but unfortunately they aren’t.  For example:

“my body, my choice”

Starchild Stela character, a girl with shoulder length and slightly curly hair, two girls in the center of a doily, with the words 'my body, my choice'

and “consent is mandatory”

Starchild Stela character, a girl with shoulder length and slightly curly hair, sticker on a window, pale pink background with pink bows in a pattern, with the words 'consent in mandatory'

and “support survivors”

“destroy rape culture”

“leave me alone”

“gender studies”

hanging out on grey walls

The following pieces of graffiti and street art were found in a lane that more an entranceway to an apartment complex parking garage than an alley.   I forgot to make note of where it was, except that it is somewhere in Fitzroy.   There were a number of tag-like, or letter, graffiti that I didn’t photograph.  Amongst those there were a few stencils and paste-ups that were interesting.

Two small paste ups. on the right is the head and shoulders of a girl with brown hair and blue top and on the left is a small black and white drawing of a little creature onto which someone has drawn blue eyes and mouth

a black stencil on grey wall of a creature blowing bubbles. The bubbles have been painted yellow. The vreature is sitting. Has the upper body and arms of a human, but the legs of a hairy animal (cat? dog?).

Paste up of almost life sized Asian girl standing in a corner of a garage. Short straight black hair, black pants, and a red floral print on yellow top. Beside her is a large tag graffiti with M O G. The O has been turned into the face of a little creature with big white eyes and a funny round nose

Two street art pieces. On the right is a black stencil of a person wearing an African mask and holding a branch behind his head. He is sitting on the back of an animal. on the left is a simplistic drawing of a square face with two little stick legs

artist paper paste-ups

Paste-ups seen on Artist Lane, Windsor (Melbourne) this past weekend.

Artist Lane runs parallel to Chapel St. between Green and Union streets, just north of Windsor station.   It has the highest concentration of good street art that I have seen yet in Melbourne.  I have too many pictures for one blog post.  As a result, have divided it up into sections, paste-ups (paper), stencils, and paintings.  Here are the paste-ups.
