below: Mixing paint in a wood bucket while standing on Cologne’s crest – three gold crowns above eleven flames. The three crowns symbolize the Three Wise Men whose bones are said to be kept in a golden sarcophagus in Cologne Cathedral. They were brought in 1164, by Rainald of Dassel, the Archbishop of Cologne; this made the city a major pilgrimage destination.
